Allistair is an award-winning Contemporary Surface Designer with a background in fine art, fashion and printed textiles. His artwork is based on his sensory responses to sound, particularly music, as well as the shapes and symbols found within the natural and urban landscapes and architecture. The surface designs of Allistair’s wool rugs are based on his paintings and drawings, which he describes as “visual interpretations of the audio landscape”. The expressive brush strokes and splashes of colour that feature heavily in the #CanvasToCarpet collection, effortlessly translate into hand-knotted rugs, showcasing not only Allistair's vibrant colourful aesthetic but also highlights the work of the expert carpet weavers in Nepal and Afghanistan. Allistair's interest and appreciation of rugs began in the summer of 2013. In January 2014 Allistair won the AfghanMade Best Young Designer Award at the 9th Carpet Design Awards at Domotex Hannover in Germany. The award marked Allistair’s first venture into designing for the carpet design industry and encouraged him to refocus his practice to create woven artworks for interior spaces. Allistair has collaborated with companies Rug-Maker, AfghanMade and Think Positive Prints UK and organisations including Campaign for Wool and Arts Thread on various projects. In 2015 Allistair’s work received royal recognition from HRH Prince Charles when he was invited to take part in the Cambrian Mountains Wool International Design Challenge and at the start of 2016 Allistair’s textile artwork, ‘Digital Stitch’, was acquired by the National Wool Museum in Wales to be part of their permanent textile collection. Since 2014 Allistair has been a Fellow of the Digswell Arts Trust, an arts organisation devoted to supporting new talent and emerging creatives. In 2017 Digswell Arts will be celebrating it’s 60th Anniversary and notable alumni include the textile and rug designer Peter Collingwood, the ceramicist Hans Coper and sculptor John Mills.
